It all began in November, 1991, when the first XLARGE STORE opened in Vermont
Avenue LA. The store spread the street culture of the 1990’s from LA, to the world. It
was started by Eli Bonerz and Adam Silverman, just graduated from Architect School.
In the 90’s, a new street culture was born in LA; a mix of skateboard and music culture,
as opposed to that of New York City where hip hop and graffiti culture was born. In the
rich street culture of West Coach, Eli, Adam and Mike D from Beastie Boys, together
gave the XLARGE STORE a strong cultural identity, with the support of BEASTIE BOYS.
The items that the XLARGE STORE carried was groundbreaking at the time, which
attracted many street culture enthusiasts. By carrying, work wear such as Ben Davis
and Carhartt, old school sneakers such as Adidas and Puma, and their original brand
XLARGE OG logo apparel items as well, they built the concept of the multi-brands
shops of today, presented a unique style, “a representation of utilitarian wear as
fashion, as opposed to everyday wear”. The most classical item of XLARGE, “OG Tshirt”, with original gorilla graphics and XLARGE® script, designed by Eli Bonerz,
became a symbolic design in early street fashion boom, and has been all the rage over
25 years.
XLARGE created an original fashion style by blending the music, art and skateboarding
culture. Nowadays,XLARGE continues to be the innovator and pioneer of the street
wear world.
